One of America’s greatest politicians, most respected and beloved personalities, Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States.
Lincoln’s story is a remarkable one. Born into a humble family with illiterate parents, he got from being a shopkeeper to holding the highest office. While being president, Lincoln led his people through the Civil War, the costliest war in the history of the U.S., and made major decisions on the Union war strategy. He fought for equal rights, liberty, and democracy. Those hard and bloody times led to the abolition of slavery and made the economy flourish.
He served from 1861 to 1865. He was globally known for leading the country through its civil war which was the most brutal, bloodiest war United States has ever witnessed. Not only did he lead the country through war but he also abolished slavery, made the federal government strong and modernized the entire economy. Born February 12, 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky in United States Lincoln was the second child of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He had one elder sister Sarah and a younger brother Thomas who passed away as an infant. When Lincoln was a child he disliked physical labor and preferred reading, writing, scribbling and poetry etc. His family always thought that he did all of that to avoid any kind of physical labor. Lincoln was self educated and his school education was almost nil. When he entered the teenage phase of life he did every chore that was expected of the boys of any household. In 1831 when he was old enough he left his family and went to look for job opportunities.
Switching to merrier times, Abraham Lincoln was also the one to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. That big turkey wouldn’t have had the same appeal without Thanksgiving, would it?
In 1860 he was nominated for the President of Republican party position and he swept the north and he was elected in 1861. When the Civil war started and progressed Lincoln himself looked upon the war strategies and tried to enforce peace. His primary goal was to reunite the nation and so he personally took pat in even the selection of general and other officials of the Army. As the war progressed he focused more on abolishing slavery and even used the US Army to protect the slaves. As the war continued he reached out to war democrats and simultaneously handled his presidential election campaigns in 1864. The confederate army of the south was not very strong and Lincoln anticipated the result of the war and so he proposed the reconstruction of the nation and was reelected in 1864. Five days after the 9th Confederate commanding general surrendered, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. When Lincoln was sitting unguarded in a theater John Wilkes Booth who was a supporter of the Confederacy crept up behind him and shot the president from point blank range and ran away. Lincoln was barely alive and was moved across the street where he succumbed to his injury after remaining in coma for nine hours. John Wilkes was caught 12 days later hiding in a farm and was shot dead when he refused to surrender.
