In 1860 he was nominated for the President of Republican party position and he swept the north and he was elected in 1861. When Lincoln was sitting unguarded in a theater John Wilkes Booth who was a supporter of the Confederacy crept up behind him and shot the president from point blank range and ran away. Lincoln was barely alive and was moved across the street where he succumbed to his injury after remaining in coma for nine hours. John Wilkes was caught 12 days later hiding in a farm and was shot dead when he refused to surrender.
